Beaudesert Park School Library

Beaudesert Park School Library is a new learning space created within the roof of the historic school building. With steep, wooded grounds limiting new development, the design focused on reusing the existing footprint to keep the library central and accessible. This unlocked a previously unused attic, transforming a dark loft into a light-filled, inspiring space for reading and reflection while reducing cost.

The central challenge was occupying a confined loft space while creating a welcoming, flexible, and playful learning environment.

The sloping ceilings, dips in the floor, and restricted access required inventive use of levels. Stepped floors, tunnels, nooks, and window seats create zones for concentration, shared reading, and exploration. Storage drawers integrated into the steps combine function with delight, encouraging curiosity and interaction.

Collaboration with the pupils shaped the design, ensuring the space would be loved and used.

Interactive design sessions invited children to contribute ideas, from reading tunnels to bespoke lighting that incorporates books. Their input added personality, playfulness, and ensured the library functions as a successful, engaging learning space.

Natural materials, warm timber, soft tones, and finely detailed joinery give the library a sense of craftsmanship, permanence, and connection to the school. Generous glazing opens views to the surrounding valley and woodland, connecting children to nature and daylight, enhancing wellbeing and creating a calm, tactile environment for learning.
